Pair of 13 year old girls charged with stolen car spree
Police have charged two 13-year-old girls after a spree of stolen cars ended with a hit-and-run crash.
At around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, a car was reported stolen at the downtown Sioux Falls Public Library. The owner told police their car was missing when they came back outside. Just after 8 p.m., a customer at Ace Hardware near 41st Street and Minnesota Avenue told police they were inside the store for five minutes. Once outside, they also found their car was stolen.
A third vehicle was stolen in the Pettigrew Heights neighborhood west of downtown just after midnight Thursday. It was found by officers after a hit-and-run crash at 29th Street and Covell Avenue between Edison Middle School and Augustana University. The other driver told police that two girls had ran from the scene.
Officers found the pair nearby and discovered that the two 13-year-old girls had stolen all three cars. One of the girls had keys to the other two vehicles and helped lead officers to both.
Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said all three vehicles were left running with the doors unlocked. He urged drivers — especially during cold weather — to make sure cars are left locked.
